Year 5 children at Phoenix Primary School in Southwark worked with artist Anita Andrews to create a magnificent entrance mosaic for their school.
Anita kicked off the project by introducing herself to the whole school in assembly – describing her artistic practice, ideas for the mosaic and how it would be created. She then led design workshops with the children, following on from initial drawings they had done in class. Anita then worked with the Year 5 classes to scale up the drawings and turn them into a stunning mosaic, which was installed in the school’s entrance at the start of this term.
Children found out all about the history of mosaics as well as learning the techniques involved. It was a real team effort with children and staff collaborating to design and make the finished piece. The beautiful mosaic has had a really positive reaction from all who have seen it, and it just goes to show the amazing results that are possible when everyone pulls their creative ideas and talents together!
All of the children were very proud of what they had done together as a team. Their confidence level in art has improved and has changed some of the children's views for the better.
