Bow Arts runs one of the most vibrant and well attended Open Studios in London. The event provides an excellent opportunity for members of the public, curators and collectors to see a huge range of diverse art forms and artists at every stage of their careers.
The Bow Arts Open is the highlight of our events calendar and a chance to show off the amazing talent and enthusiasm of our community of over 400 artists. This community embraces visual artists, sculptors, designers and craftspeople and the Open provides an opportunity to throw open the doors and embrace the wider creative community and general public. This year's Open is taking a slightly different format to previous years. The Bow Road and P1 Open Studios takes place in June, followed by the SE1 Open Studios and Open Show later in September down in Bermondsey.
This year's Bow Road and P1 Open Studios takes place on Friday 27th June 6-9pm and Saturday 28th June 1-5pm and we would love to see you there.
...but first off, what is an Open Studio event?
You might have heard about Open Studios. Indeed, you might have heard about someone else’s Open Studios event. And all the while, have you secretly been asking yourself what it means? You’re not the only one. Apart from being really fun, Open Studios are the artists' chance to share their work with a curious audience (that’s you!)
Over a Friday evening and a Saturday afternoon, our artists will open their studios and invite you in. We have a number of studios in the landmark industrial buildings in Bow Road as well as the nearby state-of-the-art converted biscuit factory at P1 studios. This means that, with map in hand, you can wander from studio to studio, all within a couple of hundred metres of each other Once you’ve found your way into one of our artist’s creative spaces you can have a bit of a nose round, discuss, make contacts, view and, should you so wish, even buy a piece of original art work. After that you can go and see another studio.…. and another.… and another. As many as you like really – bearing in mind that we only have about 150 artists at Bow Road and P1 and we’re only open for two days!
Throughout your visit you are invited to have a wander into the court yard where you will find music, food, drink and market stalls. More than anything through this event we’re creating an opportunity for artists and non-artists to come together in an act of community. The only requirement is your curiosity.
"I couldn't believe the enormous range of talent and creativity on display in one building - there was too much too take in on one day!" Visitor to Open Studios
Organised tours for collectors and curators
We have also expandied the Open programme to run throughout the year, with selected visits and tours for collectors held in small groups.
In October 2011 we hosted a small group attending the Whitechapel Art Gallery's 'Collecting Contemporary Art' course, introducing the to a small group of painters at various stages of their exhibiting careers
